What is my business model? Do I make money by monetising data?
If the answer to the zeroth question is yes, none of the other questions matter. Your business exists to violate privacy. It can be regulated, not reformed.

imo the ad model isn’t inherently bad. Receiving ads while searching or browsing Instagram isn’t evil and (unless buggy) doesn’t send your personal information to advertisers. DuckDuckGo an especially strong example, we need responsible advertising

I have no problem with advertising, but we must take care not to confuse it with adtech. The latter is what Instagram (& Facebook do) and it’s based on tracking and surveillance. Advertising doesn’t have to be (as evidenced by DuckDuckGo, etc.) But Google, FB, etc. are in adtech.
