imo the ad model isn’t inherently bad. Receiving ads while searching or browsing Instagram isn’t evil and (unless buggy) doesn’t send your personal information to advertisers. DuckDuckGo an especially strong example, we need responsible advertising

I have no problem with advertising, but we must take care not to confuse it with adtech. The latter is what Instagram (& Facebook do) and it’s based on tracking and surveillance. Advertising doesn’t have to be (as evidenced by DuckDuckGo, etc.) But Google, FB, etc. are in adtech.

It doesn’t solve the core problem which is that corporations are tracking you to manipulate your behaviour. And without knowing exactly how that information will be used against you in the future you can’t set a price. Also misses 3rd alt: tech that you own and control.

I’m assuming an open source protocol. There’s a need to use data to improve decision making at a consumer level
