Well I’d definitely rather invest out of an infinite horizon pool of capital with no pressure to return cash. And I’m a fan of some of the commune models still found in eg the Basque Country. But short of that VC is a relatively efficient model of patient capital.

But this is a good discussion. Profit motives usually end up destroying the original dream or damaging the mission. Return maximisation drives errant behaviour and corrodes purpose. I can virtue signal all I want but at some I pass the baton to someone else

And that’s the tragedy of it, Fred. So you do see that. And it’s not an “if” but a “when”. Imagine what we could achieve if all that care, time, and energy was being expanded on top of solid foundations. If the things we built did just what they said on the tin and nothing more.

Yeah man I totally get you and think about this often. Always the question of whether you can do good work inside “the system”. We also need way more antitrust and regulation to protect the individual.
