A few suggestions, based on personal experience: 1. Decline to take part in manels (put it in your speaking terms) 2. If you find yourself on a manel despite #1 on the day, try to find a qualified woman to take your place* 3. If you can’t, acknowledge it from stage, discuss ithttps://twitter.com/AtheneDonald/status/957377367852437505 …

* Never impose: only do this if you can find a volunteer and if that the person is ok with the attention. If so, also publicly point out how disappointed you are in the organisers of the conference that you were able to do on the day what they failed to with months to plan.https://twitter.com/aral/status/957555616330977282 …

Manels are never an accident: they’re a symptom of a greater systemic issue. Fixing that will require a firm commitment by the organisers to diversify their own organisation and change their own culture. That’s not going to happen if we give them easy outs to ignore the issue.https://twitter.com/aral/status/957557010861522944 …
