You know, @pawapp, when people pay ~€50 for your app, they don’t expect to be constantly tracked by Microsoft, Inc. (HockeyApp). Shame on you! (Discovered while testing latest @charlesproxy and now disabled thanks to @littlesnitch.) #SurveillanceCapitalismpic.twitter.com/gzIClsEzXS

Thanks for reporting this! This tracking is really disturbing, we’re going to investigate this. We use @hockeyapp for crash reporting, but clearly there’s no reason for them to send tracking messages when no crash has occurred. We honestly weren’t aware of this, sorry.

So sorry about the confusion with this! HockeyApp by default collects some very basic, anonymous, aggregated statistics about how the app is being used. We have documentation for how to disable that here: https://www.hockeyapp.net/help/sdk/mac/5.1.0/installation--setup.html#user-metrics …

Thanks for replying, Lukas. Can you please tell me how having device & user id, etc., is anonymous/aggregated? It is considered personal data under #gdpr and – given lack of consent/opt-in – should make Microsoft & devs liable for fines up to 4% of global revenue. CC @PaulNemitzpic.twitter.com/vNoMEV3dGm

The user ID is a GUID that’s created in first launch of the app and that’s stored in the keychain. It is deleted once the app is uninstalled. A fresh install is a new user ID. We don’t create a user or device ID that’s persisted.

The data in the screenshot is what was *transmitted* to Microsoft. It will be interesting to see how it holds up under #gdpr. This might be one of those interesting first cases for determining precedent perhaps, @PaulNemitz.

As Benjamin mentioned, the GUIDs in the data you observed are indeed generated, random values which don’t allow HockeyApp to identify a specific user or device and hence this data is also not affected by GDPR as it is not considered PII.

I’d just like to also add that Microsoft as a whole and HockeyApp specifically takes user privacy very seriously which is why HockeyApp currently doesn’t (and never has) collected any PII by default.
