2. If you see “digital rights”, this is a smell. Most people I’ve met who work in “digital rights” do so for corporate interests that want those rights to be separate, lesser rights than the human rights you already have. Look instead for: “_human rights_ in the digital age”.

3. When in doubt, follow the money. The money trail never lies. If it’s an organisation that purports to care about privacy, find out how they’re funded. If they get their funds from adtech companies, you know that they’re just a public relations / privacywashing outfit.

4. 99.99999% of blockchain-based “decentralisation” efforts are right-libertarian get rich quick schemes not social justice initiatives. If you hear “blockchain”, “cryptocurrency”, or “ICO”, step calmly back towards the exit without making any sudden moves.

5. If an ethical alternative is venture capital funded, ask them what their exit strategy is. “Your investors only profit when the company is sold. Who (company/IPO) do you expect to buy your company and why? How will you maintain control of your social mission when you sell?”

I spent a decade identifying as a privacy professional, and was internationally recognized as such. I was barely paid, as privacy advocates are David, fighting against Goliath. I can not be accused rationally of eroding privacy during that time, as I fought for & taught privacy.
