Have never felt comfortable with the CCC or felt the desire to participate in their events and it’s because of things like this. Keep getting asked but the culture seems so cultish. Been seeing this in a number of “progressive” groups and it makes me sad.

Progressive groups have to work twice as hard to avoid becoming cults of personality. We should exist to not exist. Instead, you see rights of passage, identities grounded on being counter mainstream, and a knee-jerk circling of the wagons whenever there’s any internal criticism.

How can any centralised institution hope to usher in a decentralised future if one of its core tenets isn’t to write itself out of the equation once it has created the decentralised infrastructure that makes it obsolete?

The goal should be to change the mainstream for the better, not to create an identity so strongly based in being counter the mainstream that the loss of our identity, should we succeed in changing the mainstream, would be unbearable. </rant>
