Martyn,
As an educator, I’m very disappointed to see you pushing design students to intern at a company with an unethical, surveillance-based business model where they will learn to decorate that unethical core, manipulate behaviour, and manufacture addiction.

But then nobody should have an internship at Google , Facebook or Amazon ? I don't think it will help change with regard to their practices.

I’d love to see how a couple of interns (or anyone else) will change the business model of a hugely successful multi billion dollar company.

i was just wondering if boycotting is the best way to change bad practices, maybe it is, but then i know many other industries where you shouldn't have an internship

Brain drain is, definitely. If they become socially unacceptable (already starting to happen), they will have trouble employing the best of the best. Otherwise, regulating their abuses (already starting to happen) + funding/creating ethical alternatives (very early stages).
