have to be careful when mixing the two. i find "algorithmic transparency" is hugely scary to average journo. but they love "follow the data"

"follow the data" maps into standard inquiry patterns for them (money), thus very inclusive, and hugely helpful in increasing awareness
-
of course helps tremendously for "algorithmic transparency", and unique in EU that we have those rights.
-
so huge opportunity _for_ "algorithmic transparency", if we are willing to treat this as two step process in advocacy
-
it might also clarify how to best advocate for algo transparency, beyond stupid requests for "we want the source code" or
-
"we want FB to explain to the world how they maintain their competitive advantage over their competitors"
-
That last one is a strawman, it's the deliberate misrepresentation of "algorithmic accountability" used by FBs and Googles to dismiss it.
-
It's not. Some externals actively advocate for FB to explain its role in the US election, for instance. Stupid. Better:Make data available.
