Good point that the Web works fine for Google. But is ”stolen“ the right term? Didn’t we cede it to them moving onto their platforms?

I don’t think we knew what it was that we were ceding. Most of us still don’t. None of us do completely. We were bamboozled.
-
Thx, now I get why you say ”stolen“: It’s like maliciously-crafted fine print; we weren’t meant to understand the contract we signed.

So we live in The Matrix but Facebook and Google are Agent Smith?
-
More like The Matrix, inverted (we live in physical space while being farmed from virtual space vs vice versa in The Matix)

people are choosing "surveillance capitalism" each time they select a free service vs a pay one. Nothing is "stolen".
-
it's not a choice when you have a monopoly of a business model + people farming isn't limited to free services +
@dsearls -
"monopoly of a biz model" and lots of people do "people farming". Seems like you can't decide if it's a monopoly or not.
-
Michael - multi-sided platforms have strong +ve scale effects. Does any level of power over citizens concern you?
-
If platforms overreach than market generates competition. Think: Microsoft. It's what makes capitalism awesome.
-
But you might have to wait many years for it, cf enterprise desktop. In meantime, users vulnerable to power abuse
-
True. But the alternative is to face govt force and abuse.

Are there no other forces of civil society that can help encourage ethical behaviour? Is this really best can do?
