Technology, as Melvin Kranzberg said, “is neither good nor bad, nor is it neutral.” Ask: who owns & controls it? You or a corporation?

With “smart” tech, ask: who’s getting smarter about whom? Is it us getting smarter about ourselves or corporations getting smarter about us?
-
If we (individuals) own/control our tech/data, there’s no problem with “smart” tech. That’s a decentralised world compatible with democracy.
-
But if corporations own/control our tech/data, we are talking about a world of immense power imbalance and corporate rule: a corporatocracy.
-
Needless to say, we live in the latter—a corporatocracy—today. Our challenge is to forge a decentralised path forward to reclaim democracy.
