Is there a way around this? Is using iOS a solution or is there a better way to do mobile?

It’s the best stop-gap I know at the moment. (And, of course, don’t install Google apps on it.) :)

That's a shame! But thanks for the information. Any chance you can get on with developing a privacy considered mobile?

Going directly for a phone isn’t going to work (looked into that at depth) without a decentralised infrastructure it can use…

It's not only about indie apps, what's missing is the Indie OS.
-
Yes – what I mean re: apps is that we must move beyond the app concept: app = data + functionality. We must separate those.

HW is there, thousands of indie designers and devs too. But where is the project to bring all of these together?
-
It’s not a phone – we must create the decentralised infrastructure that a phone & other devices can use to move beyond ‘apps’
-
totally agree but even with the decentralised infrastructure all which sits on top of that must be sovereign from company control

And so are iPhones. The key problem is the lack of an community driven OS which gets all the hard stuff right (UI, UX, HW support)
