In the UK (at least in 2004), I couldn’t open a bank account without a residence, and I couldn’t get a residence without a bank acc.

Yep, had that. But RBS opened one for me. Some other banks didn’t.

Yeah, I could easily show the HSBC branch and landlord what was going on, and it worked out fine.
