I admire @aral's idealism, but it is difficult to convince most people that it's a good idea to be independent of Big Cloud on principle.

20 years ago, TV ads in the US ended with "AOL Keyword: Pepsi". Then they used http://pepsi.com . Now: http://facebook.com/pepsi .

I picked Pepsi as a random example, typed the URLs into the tweet without checking them, and http://www.pepsi.com is broken on iOS.
