Yeah, “data privacy” is bullshit. It’s decoration, misdirection, whitewashing. We strive for “human privacy”.https://twitter.com/Steve_Lockstep/status/713113191027310592 …

“Data privacy” isn’t privacy at all as the prerequisite for privacy is that *you* make the decision about what you share/keep to yourself.
-
…You cannot make that decision if your data originates on / is stored on / is analysed by tech you do not own and control yourself.
-
So those who harp on about “data privacy” take “public as a default” as a given and attempt to decorate that to make it more palatable.
-
Those who care about privacy strive to make technology *private by default*. So *you* decide when and if you want to share something.

@aral but how does that work with the west's current obsession over democracy as equivalent to socialism? Storage costs money. -
@aral what was 30 years ago owned by the state is now owned by corporations, because people continue to prefer free beer over freedom. -
@erkunev That’s the core social/political issue, yes. We can’t solve this under capitalism. The issue, at heart, is about inequality. -
@aral doesn't "non capitalism" imply higher state control? How does that help freedom and privacy? -
@erkunev@aral Look into the#CollectiveContract for a viable decentralised, noncorporate, noncapitalist, freedom & privacy protecting model

@aral I guess the only way to control data privacy is by going non digital. Removing digital trace, digital identity. Are we really ready ? -
