This is the lesson free/open must learn: you cannot compete with people who make cars if you’re building engines.https://twitter.com/meedabyte/status/701716452483670016 …

To take it further: your favourite Linux distribution is an *excellent* engine but only enthusiasts install their own engines in their cars.
… Everyone else walks into a dealer and buys a car. Now if that car’s an Apple, they can’t get to the engine even if they wanted to …
… So our greatest challenge is how to design beautiful, convenient cars for everyone where you *can* get to the engine *if you want to*.
… In other words (a) we must be design-led and (b) we must design beautiful defaults.
Today in free & open, we say “everyone should learn how to install an engine & build their own car.” If we can’t change this, we’ve lost.

@aral I have both and only the Linux distro provides a proper audio player that plays my music
@alexje002 Where did you buy your Linux computer?
@aral gigabyte motherboard, but think you might be asking it was preinstalled? no I installed the OS like I would have done for Windows.
@alexje002 Yep, which is cool but you’re the 1% of tech – we must compete with everyday things that don’t have that barrier of entry :)
@aral you get it -- we're building a car and keeping the hood unlocked so users can tinker and modify.
@aral Apple "owns all the components of [its] business process". A MacBook is almost entirely Apple.
@aral to clarify, I was referring to the software. I don't see how a MacBook is different from a PC with some distro pre-installed.
@brandoninvergo I walk into an Apple Store, buy a MacBook, open the lid as I’m walking out & start using it. That’s the competition.
@aral Right but that's unrelated to the post that you quoted about "post-industrial companies". Apple doesn't fit that description.
@aral Fortunately things advance (slowly). We have a couple of Linux distros that fall under the experience category.
@comzeradd @aral #Linux desktop is a huge pile of shit.
It wins only by being less bad than the alternatives.
@aral Sorry but your comparison based on the original quote is specious. Apple does not combine components by others. GNU/Linux distros do.
