@Steve_Lockstep Please don’t misrepresent what I said. I was making the distinction between “free” & “open”, not spreading FUD about FOSS. -
.
@aral Sorry - I was just riffing on other senses of "free". And that Open is no nirvana. -
.
@Steve_Lockstep No worries; hard to communicate intent in 140 characters — just wanted to clarify that that was not my point :)

@aral Apple is the opposite of free as in freedom (and, well, as in free). -
@xiroux They are in that they are a closed platform. They are not in that their business model isn’t to spy on you. Not perfect; a stopgap. -
@aral They don't spy on you? Well, we do not know; as long as you are not able to know what they are doing with their software and machines, -
@aral your only alternative is to have faith. -
@xiroux I’m not saying they can’t spy on you if they wanted to. I’m saying it is against their economic self-interest to do so.

@aral what about open as in "Open Data"? -
@EamonLeonard Open data doesn’t protect the freedom of the data. I’ve seen it used too often as a synonym for privatisation.

@aral do you think the old "free as in libre, not as in beer" no longer works? -
@EamonLeonard I never liked that as I always found it confusing. Still true, of course, to point out difference between free as in zero cost
