Well, that’s a first: “It appears that you are currently using Ad Blocking software…” Stay creepy, @physorg_compic.twitter.com/PTo7Xd5WKP

Yes, pls disable your ad blocking software (in this case, Ghostery) so that #spyware companies can track your every move easier. No, thanks.

@aral Huh. They say "Google Chrome blocks any 3rd-party cookies by default." Doesn't seem right. http://phys.org/help/adblock/

@aral @physorg_com to be fair, to people like me who depend on adverts to eat, adblocking software is pretty awful.

@matthewhughes @physorg_com Sure, serve ads — but don’t use third-party spyware systems to do it. (How many do that?)

@aral and build a fair, equitable alternative to existing ad networks.

@matthewhughes There you go. Independent ads. No tracking. There *can* be alternatives.

@aral I think there are ad-blocking-whinge-banner block-lists for various ad-blockers now. Block the blocking blockers! Very meta. Wow.

@aral what’s creepy here? Detecting blocked ads is trivial, and educating the visitor about the consequences for the website is legitimate.

@aral It's not that big of deal. One has to check if a certain element is present in DOM. If not present, AdBlock to blame.
