Perhaps Western progressives with no first-hand knowledge of Islam should listen to those of us brought up in it who say there is a problem.

@aral Reza Aslan made the point better. Stop saying "Islam" and instead say Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan etc -
@pilky No, as an ex-Muslim (a state of being punishable by death in some countries) I’ll continue to say Islam because that is the problem. -
@aral It hurts the muslims who don't believe in the extreme stuff, while simplifying much of the extreme stuff, hurting its victims -
@pilky As one of those victims, who was born into it and lived under it, I am telling you you're wrong. Apologising for it is what hurts us. -
@aral Theres a difference between apologising with it and saying "muslims are a wide and varied group" -
@pilky The latter is a given. Islam is a very specific thing, however. -
@aral Religion is about the least specific thing in the world, it's why the same text can be used as an excuse to help and to kill -
@pilky It's only not-specific if you're apologising for it. The Qur’an is pretty damn specific. As is the Bible. Etc. - 1 more reply

@aral Such a complex issue. Overall I believe it's a debate to be had between muslims out in the open without fear. Not by non-muslims.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
