So a custom iOS keyboard called CoolKey just spammed me that they reached #1 on the App Store. http://cooolapp.com/presskit.html Here’s the problem…
-
-
So
@Apple, this is the instruction screen for CoolKey that tells people to allow full access to activate the keyboardpic.twitter.com/ieR6eG4fr5
-
…Can someone please tell me how this custom keyboard got through to the App Store with that misleading screen?
@tim_cook, anyone…? - 1 more reply

@aral unless the user explicitly gives full access, the data goes nowhere. -
@Smutchings@davemurdock Downloading some of them now to see how this is implemented. -
@aral@davemurdock the keyboard only has access to the network if you go into Setting > General > Keyboard and enable it within the keyboard -
@Smutchings It doesn’t make sense. Without data collection, providing a free keyboard makes no business sense for the company.+@davemurdock -
@aral Unless they’re going to sell accessories, extensions, etc. (which may well be the case) +@Smutchings@davemurdock -
@aral SwiftKey swipe and prediction feature doesn’t work either if you don’t send your data to them /cc@Smutchings@davemurdock -
@__debo@aral@Smutchings@davemurdock still pretty scary they request access to all tweets, FB updates, mails etc. and continue monitoring

@aral Have you seen the popups in iOS8: "(X) app has been collecting location info in background, do you want to continue?" -
@bokardo Haven’t come across it yet. That’s a very good alert. Do you know if it blocks the app until permission is given? -
@aral It says "App has been gathering location information…do you want it to continue to do so?" Basically extended permission. -
@aral I had already clicked "No" when I realized how unique a popup it was. (so didn't screenshot it)

@aral (because when you get to a password field, the iPhone switches to the standard built in keyboard so they can't)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@aral These keyboards can only collect data if you turn on the "allow network access" option for it. And no passwords are collected.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
