@brianbehlendorf Hey Brian, why would you invest in equity when we will never sell or have an IPO? What’s the return? (Genuine question… -
@aral great companies can have other outcomes, such as paying out dividends. Does need to be profitable. Is profit contra to the manifesto? -
@brianbehlendorf Nope, quite the contrary: creating sustainable, cash-flow positive, profitable businesses is a core tenet. -
@aral what biz model is most aligned with the indie tech principles/manifesto that does not reduce to charity or support? -
@brianbehlendorf Selling things :) In our case, we will be selling the phone (& not competing on price—think Tesla of phones)…

@aral Like the message against technological determinism & for consumer ownership of data. But, can I sign & still use Google Analytics? -
@NicholasKatz Hah, you can do whatever you like, Nick (& thanks) :) But remember that w GA, you’re leaking other people’s data to Google.

@aral I'm not trying to be incendiary! I just dig your manifesto, but imagine in some areas I might be contradictory in my approach -
@NicholasKatz Don’t think you’re being incendiary. :)

@aral also see recent raise by Wickr - while not open source, it indicates consumer demand and investor appetite for privacy tech -
@brianbehlendorf What is Wickr’s business model? How do they make money? If not free/open, relies on trust alone.
