Without global *public* alternatives to Twitter, etc. what we’re saying is that we’re ok with the privatisation of the public sphere.

@Aral Alternatives must deliver value to users not just convenience. VC funded start ups grow by delivering value for "free" cc@MayaPosch -
@NeilMilliken@MayaPosch Indeed & they will deliver whole-term value, not short-term value at the cost of eroding freedoms in the long-term. -
@aral@MayaPosch Size and scale requires funding. In the past only VC and banks could provide, thats why crowd funding is so exciting.

@aral@MayaPosch VC funded twitter delivers great value to users but the need to monetise to pay back VCs will lead to destruction of value. -
@NeilMilliken Which is why email, IRC, forums, etc. will not go away as they don’t need a business model. /cc@aral -
@MayaPosch@aral all of those things have a very long tail but they are fragmented and still require hosting... -
@NeilMilliken True, but nobody owns them. If Twitter shuts down, all tweets are gone. Not so for email, IRC, etc. /cc@aral -
.
@MayaPosch@NeilMilliken@aral If Hotmail or Gmail shutdown you will lose all your emails. Most people don't do local backups.#cloud. -
@akwyz@MayaPosch@aral good job I am not most people. Back ups done. Email history is too important to risk losing.

@aral Well, I find IRC and forums to be more convenient than (ugh) Facebook, G+ and such. No slow UIs, data harvesting, or too much fluff :)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
