Without global *public* alternatives to Twitter, etc. what we’re saying is that we’re ok with the privatisation of the public sphere.

The privatisation of the public sphere is basically the privatisation of democracy. And privatised democracy is no longer democracy.

A crucial ramification of Silicon Valley’s digital colonialism is an almost total loss of the public sphere. #democracy #humanrights

@aral What's wrong with IRC as a public space? Anyone can set up an IRC server :)

@aral Feh, today's generation is so lazy. In my day people would set up their own servers for IRC, gaming... everything :D

@MayaPosch ’cos more convenient alternatives exist & they’re used to them. We can’t change that. Alternatives must compete on convenience :)

@Aral Alternatives must deliver value to users not just convenience. VC funded start ups grow by delivering value for "free" cc @MayaPosch

@NeilMilliken @MayaPosch Indeed & they will deliver whole-term value, not short-term value at the cost of eroding freedoms in the long-term.

@aral @MayaPosch Size and scale requires funding. In the past only VC and banks could provide, thats why crowd funding is so exciting.

@aral What if we just pretend it's public sphere, and demand what we demand? After all, Twitter really WANTS us to use this space.

@greshgurt We don’t have much bargaining power. It’s like the chicken bargaining for better conditions with the battery farm.

@aral True, especially when we want different things, and many don't want anything. Which wouldn't really be problem with public space, BTW
