It’s sad to see so much of the industry and media adopt this doublespeak without critical analysis.

So the next time you hear someone from Google/Facebook speak of something being private on their systems, ask: “you mean ‘public’, right?”
-
Because if something is just between you and Facebook or Google — that’s public, not private. Private means “for you alone”.
-
@aral Private doesn't have to mean for you alone, something private can be for a group of selected individuals. -
@shaundunne In the context of that group, yes. In the context of the individual, private means for you alone. -
@aral@shaundunne If I wanted something private for me alone, why would I need to put it on facebook or G+? I'd likely choose Mega. -
@JohnK___ If Mega does all that Google does, sure. It doesn’t. I’m talking about the “private” setting on these networks. +
@shaundunne -
@aral@shaundunne Private is relative and also a contextual expectation. How many expect social networking to suffice an individual need.

When Google/Facebook talk about protecting your privacy, they’re talking about protecting *their* privacy. Because your data is theirs.
-
In that model, you have no privacy because you cannot opt out of sharing with Google & Facebook. That’s the default. The default is public.

@aral It seems to be private at first sight, but everybody who occasionally walks by can hear everything you are talking about.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@aral A nice analogy would be that you are chatting with friends somewhere in a corner of a bar.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
