Having a SIM card in a smartphone today is like having a fireplace in a spaceship. Nothing but a lock-in play and a barrier to innovation.

Time to consider a virtual SIM? “…regulators in Netherlands became the first…to legalise network agnostic SIM cards” http://deltapartnersblog.com/archives/766

@aral , speaking of SIMs, 21st. century etc., I would like to know your opinion on http://www.impot.io -
@Tunam34 404? :) -
@aral , sorry.! http://www.import.io -
@Tunam34 I’m a big fan of scraping — but that’s a proprietary tool — so, again, a squandered opportunity to do massive good. -
@aral , thx, I just wanted to get an expert's view on what they have been building there.

@aral How do I take my number and plan with me from device to device? Would each of my phones need their own plan? -
@ScottKellum It doesn’t make any sense to me to have difference plans for every device. You should have a plan, not your devices. -
@aral totally, yeah, just curious what the solution would be. -
@ScottKellum There are a couple groups with interesting solutions at the moment (& no doubt more will surface) :) -
@aral Would love a better solution, but would hate to be stuck with something like CDMA.

@aral not really related but you might find this interesting if you haven't already seen it http://www.osnews.com/story/27416/The_second_operating_system_hiding_in_every_mobile_phone …. -
@brucel Thanks for the link, Bruce. Very much aware of it. Unfortunately, a billion-dollar problem to solve. Best we can do is not trust it.

@aral I’m mostly intrigued where your newfound hatred of space-faring fireplaces sprang from. -
@CraigGrannell Bad experience near Alpha Centauri — long story :)
