Very disappointed to see that ‘open data’ is basically meaningless as a term. Will start to use ‘free (libre) data’ to mean ‘data you own’.
@anlumo1 I used to think the way you do. I was wrong. Try to see beyond your needs & understand the effects of this on our civil liberties.

@onechrisl Unlike physical property, there is no harm done when copying data, no matter what the Copyright industry wants us to believe. -
@anlumo1 I respectfully disagree. Data is the result of work (e.g. collecting it). As long as it's valuable, taking it constitutes harm. -
@onechrisl How? You can still use all of your work for whatever purposes you want. -
@anlumo1 Say my goal is to sell it: if there are 10 people who will buy my data and you sell it to 5 of them, you've cut my market in half -
@onechrisl why should they buy it from you when they can get it for free as well? -
@anlumo1 Good point. But this is a separate question than whether appropriation of non-physical property can constitute harm. I'd say it can -
@onechrisl I’m a bit sick of the harm the copyright industry does to the society and trying to work towards one where it’s irrelevant. - 1 more reply

@aral That’s a completely separate discussion to capturing the definition of a common word for your own interpretation.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
