RT @British_Airways: “@aral It’s standard practice for airlines to oversell flights” Sounds like we need regulation. How is this not fraud?

@aral it will be in the terms and conditions of booking...which we never bother reading.

. @mattgreenuk Reading the terms and conditions of a specific provider is ineffectual if there is a monopoly of policy or business model.

.@aral Financials aside, if @British_Airways stopped the practice flying with them would be less environmentally friendly than with others.

@jot @British_Airways They can raise their prices and achieve the same effect _and_ give everyone what they actually purchased.

@aral @British_Airways I think they might need some marketing assistance to convince all their other passengers of that.

@aral Unfortunately many people don't know their rights when flying, and the airlines often try to weasel their way out of paying out.

@aral @British_Airways I ask myself this question every time I fly. How can you legally sell something that doesn't exist?

@aral There is regulation (EU 261/2004): if you're denied boarding, the airline must financially compensate you – http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm …

@aral airlines have been doing this for a very long time. I assumed it was common knowledge… It's merely capitalism at its finest.

@aral a sad necessity to get the planes filled. Otherwise they’d fly 10-20% empty, necessitating more flights. Bad for environment, I guess.

@aral @British_Airways If the flight does end up being overbooked they have an auction offering guest money if they can take a later flight.
