.@aral DDG is OK, but it's still based in US, and so subject to NSA orders; https://startpage.com/ is based in NL, maybe somewhat safer

@glynmoody I still have my doubts about StartPage’s ‘enhanced by Google’ model. DDG is building an alternative that it independent. -
@aral well, there's also https://ixquick.com/ , which is without the google piggybacking... -
@glynmoody But again uses other search engines, no? I like that DDG are building their own alternative technology :) -
@aral indeed; but I'm not really sure why that's an advantage. doesn't it make it much easier for NSA to apply pressure/doctor results? -
@glynmoody Hmm, just did a bit of research; looks like DuckDuckGo has venture capital backing. Coupled w their being closed source, hmm :( -
@aral@glynmoody Recently discovered the disconnectme search plugin. In case you want to search anonymously. It has it's own extension

@aral forgot to add "but still provide a way of being tracked by amazon/ebay/yahoo/microsoft" -
@stryju Indeed. I don’t believe anyone has any preconceptions that the problem is solvable in a single tweet. Or simply with tweets. -
@aral then why does the 1st tweet sound like a silver-bullet solution? -
@stryju It’s the nature of a constrained medium to lend itself to succinct statements.

@aral I am trying it - do you use it yourself? :) -
@e_nicchiarelli Yep, switched to it as my default browser a little while ago. Very happy with it :)

@aral switched to Firefox with duckduckgo as default search engine over the break: works great. Also switching to 1Password. -
@jeromemaurey@aral Really? I've found Duck to be quite suck, yet I really want to like it. -
@charlesroper@jeromemaurey When did you try it last? It has definitely improved. And you can help improve it by extending it :) -
@aral@jeromemaurey I try it regularly. I set it to default on Firefox, which I use once a week at least.

@aral Would quite like to read about your setup, online services, & main app choices (computer, phone, browser, etc.) -
@maxart I should really publish that. And the journey; as I’m not nearly where I want to be with my own setup yet :) -
@aral Yes exactly, that’d be quite interesting I think.
