@aral You may not like it, but is it a "dishonest" biz model? I mean, have they ever claimed they don't do that?
@brucel The business model itself is dishonest and enfeebling for users. It’s digital feudalism.

@aral But in what sense is it "dishonest"? It's legal, they don't deny that's how they make money. I think you're overloading the term, -
@brucel It’s dishonest in that it doesn’t reveal the real cost to the user. It’s not free; the user just isn’t told how much they’re paying. -
@aral not revealing true cost to user is v common. Do you know true cost of untaxed aviation fuel? Processed food? etc (not that it;s good) -
@brucel Female genital mutilation is common too. If we go by common = acceptable we’re already fucked :) -
@aral But to single out 1 company for "dishonesty" in a quagmire of Shiny Happy never-mind-the-downsides advertising is missing the full pic -
@brucel Google is the biggest threat as I see it. Facebook etc. close seconds. Alas, only 140 characters in a tweet. -

@aral the real tragedy is that it makes it so hard for paid services. Look at the outcry because some twitter thing charged $4. -
@brucel Do watch my talk if you get a free hour (http://thelink.is/avoidingdigitalfeudalism …). Terms & Conditions May Apply is gr8 too (http://tacma.net )

@aral the cost of free - the tragedy is that most users don't stop to think why they're not paying for somethingThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
