RT @ebii: anyone know a good resource that teaches PHP to people that want to get into programming?
Why would you do that to someone? :)
@martinbean Rather valid point about PHP being a bad first language to learn programming with, Martin :) Disagree?

@aral …It’s the principles: control structures, OOP, design patterns etc. If you learn them, then you can apply them to any language… -
@martinbean Agree; and yet some languages make better teaching languages than others. -
@aral Which ones would you suggest then? -
@martinbean Today? Probably JS with some sort of visual canvas-based environment for immediately/visually seeing results of your actions. -
@aral I think the problem with PHP is, there are *so* many bad references and tutorials and whatnot out there. -
@martinbean Yep. Although that’s an issue with JS & web technologies in general. -
@aral Is it the same for proprietary technologies, like .NET and Objective C? As I’ve never really looked at tutorials etc. for those. -
@martinbean Not sure about .net. iOS stuff less so as it’s newer (Obj-C has lots of legacy & modern syntax very diff to 20yrs ago)

@aral Yup. It was the first language I learned, but have since learned ActionScript and Python a lot easier because I had done PHP… -
@martinbean Just because it was the first one you leaned doesn’t make it a good first language to teach programming with :)

@martinbean PHP, whilst perfectly capable, isn’t very “nice”. Loads of inconsistencies throughout. Not good for beginners. /cc@aralThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
