RT @ebii: anyone know a good resource that teaches PHP to people that want to get into programming? Why would you do that to someone? :)

@aral Because PHP is ubiquitous? It's easy to deploy, and it's actually quite a nice language (as of the last 18 months or so) /cc @ebii

@mheap @ebii Couldn’t think of a worse language to teach as a first language though. Well, perhaps Java. :)

@aral @ebii I've just realised I'm coming at this from a web point of view. Ruby/python are other options, but gem/pip does a lot there

@mheap @ebii Yeah, my comment was about the original question which was asking how to teach PHP to someone who is new to programming.

@aral @mheap @ebii teach them machine code as first language, let them learn how a computer actually works

@stuherbert @mheap @ebii Wow, please don’t do that unless you want to scare them away & give them entirely the wrong focus…

@aral @mheap @ebii entirely the *right* focus. This is how my generation learned, back before there were computing curriculums.

@stuherbert @mheap @ebii Yes, and that’s why we had several decades of hardware & software that were socially inept & unusable.

@aral @mheap @ebii and without those engineers who managed to get anything working at all, we'd all still be using paper and landlines

@aral @mheap @ebii you don't think people should learn how things work, from first principles?

@stuherbert @mheap @ebii I do. The first principles, however, are design, not binary.

@aral @mheap @ebii not if you're creating any moderately complex piece of software.
