We spend:
£12.5bn on DLA
£4.91bn on unemployment
£105bn on the NHS
£8 million for a funeral
It’s called austerity? Yes. @aral
@bookmeister It’s not meant as a literal reading. We’re told that cuts are necessary in all those & yet we’re spending £8-£10m on a funeral.

@aral yes we have state occasions. Royal weddings, prime ministerial funerals, olympics, armistice . They all cost money to put on. -
@bookmeister Yeah, about that Royal Wedding… :) Tighten your purse, citizen, the royals need to get married. -
@aral your views are so unbalanced it makes me sad.

@aral love them or hate them it doesn’t matter it’s all part of being a democracy. -
@bookmeister Let me get this straight: the royals are part of democracy? And _my_ views are unbalanced? :) -
@aral all democracies have state occasions that’s part of living in a democratic plural society -
@bookmeister The royals, by their very definition, are antithetical to democracy. State occasions can be frugal at times of austerity. -
@aral I think you’ll find thatcher was a “commoner”
