PHP makes me think of 1995. It was refreshingly simple after I wrote my first web app in C. Today, you couldn’t pay me to touch that mess :)

@aral so, what do you prefer to use for (new) web projects?

@emmanuelay I love the elegance of Python and the ethos of Node/JS. But it’s rare to use just one tech in products these days.

@aral why? what changed? you can still do the same as in ’95. It just adapted/improved so you can also do more advanced stuff

@aral that’s fair enough, but why then refer to PHP as “mess”? There’s a difference between mess and “I’ve found other/better solutions”

@aral I don't think you could pay me to touch anything I wrote back in 1995 either. PHP, on the other hand, thankfully continues to evolve

@aral I'd say PHP is popular because it allows developers to be lazy.

@aral PHP itself might be a mess. But there are many amazing frameworks that hide the quirkiness away and make it a joy again.
