@aral are we even having this discussion? Phones are transient. They are a waypoint on our journey to who knows where.

@adamauckland Replace phone with ‘device’ then :) The point is: they need to control both hardware & software—the whole experience. -
@aral experience as consumer or experience as problem solver? The opportunities a small device programmed in JavaScript offers is amazing! -
@adamauckland I mean, in order to compete successfully in the consumer space, they need to control the out‐of‐the‐box end‐user experience. -
@aral and there I agree. But why can’t this be the start of hackerspace for kids? I learned to program in CP/M aged 6, I know you’re similar -
@adamauckland Yep, definitely not saying it’s not useful. :) Just saying I want an open source solution that can compete in consumer space. -
@aral me too. I think canonical are the best bet simply because they have money to throw at the problem. OS has fundamental issues.

@aral What weights more though, data lock-in & patented gestures or roaming data and a little worse UX? -
@Arty2 That’s a necessary tradeoff—it’s a false dichotomy—open source & a good user experience need not be mutually exclusive. -
@aral Agreed; the OS community needs more designers, and corporate designers (or just their employers) need be less evil.
