@aral not everyone has an eye for design. Tell me "make site pretty" get pink flowers. Tell me "make like this mockup" get nice site

@maco_nix That’s just the thing: design is not about making the site pretty. -
@aral Then you're arguing semantics and it's redundant. Article referred to the look of the site which is a common understanding of 'design' -
@osilviotti Quite the contrary: the common understanding you speak of is a common misunderstanding. -
@aral We both know that there is more to design than making it look nice, it's just a shorthand that people use, there's no harm in it -
@osilviotti There is huge harm in it. Aesthetics is just one element of interaction design and not even the most impotent element. -
@aral But interaction design outside of the scope of the article and 'design' is applicable in that context. For the level it was aimed...

@aral@darachennis I disagree with that. I care a shitload about my user's experience. Which is why I'll hire a designer to do a better job. -
@TheColonial@darachennis And there’s nothing wrong with doing that.

@aral I'm a designer, not a programmer. And by that I mean I chose my orientation, because a few people can be really good at both. -
@silvenon What do you design? If it’s interactions, your materials are made of code. As a designer you must understand your medium. -
@aral Yes, but coding is not necessarily programming. There are programming languages, but there are also markup and style languages.

@aral can I also point you to http://www.breakingthin.gs/2012-07-08-this-site-isnt-perfect.html … - you, yourself advocate getting something out there before perfection? -
@dkirk Yes. But very different approach. I advocate design-led development; not design as veneer. -
@aral still similar in my opinion - you are leaving out useful features in order to get something out there

@aral and do we say the same to every designer who uses a pre-packaged CMS? with performance issues, security flaws... -
@dkirk Yes, you do. It’s all part of the medium. -
@aral I guess we'll have to disagree - I can't believe that every user of Wordpress, ExpressionEngine, etc doesn't care?
