@aral last time I checked it is still perfectly legal to shift around profits within the EU. That is what the system was designed for.

.
@kluivers Yes, the system is broken. -
@aral that's why paying 10m for marketing purposes is just silly. Change the system first by leveling tax rates in the EU? -
@kluivers I think the real issue is that we’ve given too much power to corporations. That’s the heart of it. It’s a new feudalism.

@aral That is so nice of them. I think I’ll decide to pay £1.50 for my Venti Latte instead of getting one for free next time! -
@CodingInsomnia That’s rather generous of you, I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. I was thinking £1.25 myself but I may volunteer a bit more :)

@aral I'd heard that Costa Coffee had made roughly the same profits, and they legally paid their tax to the tune of £15 millionThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@aral Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to choose not to pay tax. Unlike Starbucks, I legally have to pay it :(Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@aral@CraigGrannell I’ve decided to pay as little as I’m legally obliged to, just like Starbucks. -
@lukeredpath@aral But I doubt there’s a Swiss version of you charging exorbitant mark-up on everything you do. -
@CraigGrannell@aral I’m not really sold on the whole “avoiding tax is immoral” argument so Starbucks tax planning doesn’t bother me. -
@lukeredpath@aral It pisses me off, but mostly because govt should be closing loopholes/enforcing taxation laws, not whining about morals. -
@CraigGrannell@aral then I think we basically agree. The government can’t complain when companies do this kind of thing…
