Why are Chromebooks inexpensive? Wouldn’t you keep price low if people had to sign in to your ad-supported web app to use ‘their’ computer?
@jaffathecake Analytics to improve my experience are very different to building a profile of me for advertisers. Intention matters.

@aral Odd to single out the Chomebook in a practice that happens on most platforms, and has done for 20+ years. -
@jaffathecake Hasn’t, really. I don’t remember the last time I had to sign in to an online service to use my computer. -
@aral What mobile device do you have? You didn't have to register it? -
@jaffathecake Indeed, I did. And I don’t like the advertising dark pattern in iOS either. But that’s not their primary business model.

@aral You, as the userbase, are used in negotiation with publishers. This has happened since the early console era. You are a commodity. -
@jaffathecake We each help create the reality we live in by our actions. I’m pointing out a practice I don’t like and would like to change.

@aral Targeted advertising is an experience improvement compared to untargeted. It is done with analytics. I don't understand the differenceThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
