Why are Chromebooks inexpensive? Wouldn’t you keep price low if people had to sign in to your ad-supported web app to use ‘their’ computer?

@aral what gives you that feeling, compared to other devices that require login, eg iOS -
@jaffathecake I’m not ecstatic about the track for advertising by default dark pattern in iOS either. -
@aral is your point "beware: companies subsidise hardware in the hope of making money from you via its software"? -
@jaffathecake No, my beef is more with *how* they make their money from the software. Not a fan of being the product being sold. -
@aral You are a commodity to most companies you engage with. Be it advertising, recommendations, usage analysis for targeting improvement -
@jaffathecake Analytics to improve my experience are very different to building a profile of me for advertisers. Intention matters. -
@aral Odd to single out the Chomebook in a practice that happens on most platforms, and has done for 20+ years. -
@jaffathecake Hasn’t, really. I don’t remember the last time I had to sign in to an online service to use my computer. - 2 more replies
