@aral app engine can take anything I throw at it, and I’ve noticed no downtime. Only issues are total lock-in and lack of customer support.
Anyone deploying mission-critical production apps on Google App Engine? I haven’t touched it since 2008. Y’all happy with it? :)

@anlumo1 Thanks, man. What about latency? I’m noticing sites on App Engine loading rather slowly compared to other sites. -
@aral that’s only on the first request after idling for a while, then the instance is serving quickly -
@anlumo1 Hmm, gotcha. Any way to stop it idling? -
@aral yes: https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/adminconsole/performancesettings#minimum … but they charge you for that -
@anlumo1 Payments I can deal with, latency affecting user experience not so much :) (Thanks for the link) :)

@aral last time i was using it, i had a conversation with guido http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdxXqc2Npls#t=37m7s …#BDFL#python#AppEngine -
@gemmahentsch Cool, thanks; will watch that :) Worked through some of the very early issues with him back in 2007 :) -
@aral plus those libraries that are there are there are outdated… I wouldn’t use it out of choice… -
@gemmahentsch Thanks for the insights, Gemma, appreciate it :)

@aral Guardian uses it for some light-weight web services and other short/medium term apps. Speed and ease of deployment the main benefit. -
@andyhume Thanks, Andy. How did you guys find the latency and pricing on high traffic? -
@aral pricing is still absurdly cheap although changes in pricing model made it less transparent. We use it a lot.
