Did you know that [MyClass new] is shorthand for [[MyClass alloc] init]? #objectivec

@aral The problem is that when you need parameters you usually need to move to alloc] init] pattern again so its usage doesn't worth

@aral Did you know that it fell out of favour sometime around the mid 90s? :)

@jtregunna Interestingly, Apple’s included it in their update to the Objective-C programming guide.

@aral Sure, but very few people actually use it, even though we all know the NARC rules for memory management; New, Alloc, Retain, Copy

@aral Did you know that at some points in the life of Objective-C, +new was not directly equivalent to alloc-init?

@BenjaminZAMayo Afaik, new came before initialisers were introduced, didn’t it?

@aral +new comes from the NeXT days I think. But pre ~2008, +new was not synonymous with alloc-init.

@andiih Perhaps because Apple’s included it in their update to the Objective-C Programming Guide? :)

@aral have they? Might explain it. I’ve only done dotnet for the last few years so seeing upvotes against iOS 2/3 answers is kinda scary!

@aral Since it is included in Apple's Programming Guide now, is it considered good practice to use this shorthand?
