There should be a ‘lightbox’ attribute for images that gives them browser-native lightbox functionality. #css #html #web

@aral and then have a bunch of different layouts and interactions per browser? No thanks

@BramDevr Why is that a problem? You can always implement your own version if you want absolute control.

@aral that would be a bad idea, cause every browser would probably implement it different, having their own idea of how it should work

@alexmeesters That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But W3C does need to implement UX guidelines.

@aral I seriously hate the lightbox effect - terrible UX to click on an image and make it bigger without any other purpose... #IMO

@TimothyWhalin @aral Lightboxes waste my precious seconds slowly opening, fading in some image that ends up larger than my screen. Meh.

@stommepoes @TimothyWhalin Don’t confuse bad implementations with a lack of need for underlying feature: ability to see image at full res :)

@aral I get that without JS/lightboxes. What they *really* offer is prev-next keyboard/button functionality in galleries. @TimothyWhalin

@aral +1. Especially one that’s implemented as a fullscreen, swipe able image gallery on iOS and other mobile OSes.

@aral they take over the entire screen, surely it should be smarter than that. A browser implementation wouldn’t be good IMO. #lightbox

@aral but a traditional lightbox that full screen masks are terrible. I refuse to believe they are a good standard implementation.
