Very disappointed to hear that my interventions/talk at #NordicPrivacyArena about not legitimising surveillance capitalists at “privacy” events have fallen on deaf ears: the first keynote announced for next year’s event is by Google's Global Privacy Counsel.

So the wolf will be keynoting at a conference on sheep’s rights. Which begs the question: “Is this really a conference about sheep’s rights?” Remember: you can only legitimise bad actors so much before you lose legitimacy yourself.

I would urge
#NordicPrivacyArena to not invite surveillance capitalists like Google & Facebook—corporations whose core business model is based on violating privacy—to keynote & thus legitimise them. If you must, invite them to debate/answer questions: not to lead the discussion.4 replies 5 retweets 14 likesShow this thread -

It's not black & white. Certain people at Google/Facebook may want to improve privacy (and some technical solutions/standards may do so, e.g. HTTP/2 makes TLS mandatory). Whether it's "all of the privacy" and whether the employer business model limits the employee is complicated

No, you know what, it *is* fucking black and white. Their business model is not up for debate. It’s not complicated. It’s very simple: Google is a factory farm for and it will never be an animal sanctuary. It’s way past time that people got that.
