There was a time when Twitter was the only game in town (I know, as I’ve been on it since 2006). That time has passed. Mastodon is free/open, federated, & simple. You can sign up for someone else’s instance (>1,000 to choose from) or get your own (see https://masto.host )

To think that you must use Twitter or Facebook today to be social is to think that you must eat at McDonald’s if you want to eat out. Sure, McDonald’s is very popular but there are far better restaurants out there that are also better for your health and for the environment.

To end, if you want an alternative to the public parts of Twitter/FB, see Mastodon (& other federated tools like Pixelfed, Peertube, etc.) If you want private messages (which are not private on FB/Twitter), see Wire. For more options, see the excellent https://switching.social

So you don't trust Twitter?
-
I trust Twitter fully. I trust it to do what its funding and business model demands: to farm people, extract value from them, and to manipulate their behaviour for profit.
#SurveillanceCapitalism -
Do you think users get anything out of it?
-
Do you think livestock get anything from a factory farm? They get housed and fed. But to what end?
-
But you have 48k followers, you can just publish whatever content you are producing?
-
On Twitter/FB, the number of followers/“friends” you have is a meaningless statistic since they have algorithmic, not chronological timeliness. So they decide who sees & who doesn’t see what you publish. On Mastodon, I may have 4K people instead of 48K but they all get my posts.

Still very difficult to set up as a a layman
-
Difficult to setup your own instance.
-
1. Pay Hugo (https://masto.host ) €5/mo 2. There is no 2 Couldn’t be easier. It will mean forgoing one beer a month, however, so you have to be the judge of how much your freedom is worth.
-
* foregoing, even. I know forgoing isn’t technically incorrect but it looks horrible.

Do have a report on your experiences while you were switching to Mastodon?
-
It was trouble-free. I have Mastohost hosting my instance now.
-
Do you accept others on your server?
-
Nope, it’s a personal instance. I recommend others get personal instances also. (As much as I don’t want a mini-Jack deciding what I can and cannot say/do, neither do I want to be anyone else’s mini-Jack either.) :)
-
Thanks! I just learned, it's a
#rubyonrails app. Very interesting...
