Surveillance capitalism is evil. Nowhere is this more clearly visible than in the 'choice' it gives people with disabilities: either forgo access or resign yourself to having your human right to privacy violated. See as long as we see what you see, hear as long as we hear…pic.twitter.com/OJJxPNAPDQ

Jeffrey Zeldman's post on Facebook advertising a session on using VR for accessibility, where the VR in question is the Occulus by surveillance capitalist Facebook.

Oculus is by Facebook. So the price of access is having your fundamental human right to privacy violated by a surveillance capitalist. The price is being tracked & profiled. When is the Web gentry going to start calling this crap out instead of promoting and benefiting from it?

The price of accessibility must not be your human rights. And yet that is exactly the false dichotomy presented by surveillance capitalism. Please have a long, hard think about this @zeldman. I look forward to hopefully seeing you take a stand against surveillance capitalism.

Instead of asking for a little more info about this #webxr #a11y prototype that is web-based (inherently device independent & progressively enhanced), and ask why we chose certain hardware to present it with, you opt for an uninformed tantrum?

You might have more of an opportunity to inform if you address the issue I raised about your advertising/legitimising Oculus/Facebook/surveillance capitalism instead of tone policing.

Dear Aral, Roland said everything I would say. Indeed, I said much the same thing to you over on FB. (Which, by the way, why are you *on* FB? Take a long, hard think about that.) I respect what you fight for, but it’s irrelevant here. This is device-independent inclusive design.

PS. “Why are you on Facebook if you oppose it?” is classic “love it or leave it.” Don't build all the roads and sidewalks with slave labour then turn around and ask people marching against slavery why they use the roads and sidewalks if they oppose how they were built.

i honestly fail to understand how an open design would empower facebook’s business specifically in this example. the standard is hardware independent, isn’t it? facebook is at an advantage because they are the first? or they win because they get good PR out of this?

this just says “our demo device is an oculus go”. it doesn’t seem to have a broader statement about how the standard will evolve around facebook hardware. it also doesn’t say the opposite, to be fair, but still doesn’t seem as alarming as you stated.
