At least two malls are using facial recognition technology to track shoppers' ages and genders without telling https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-malls-1.4760964 … The panopticon: coming soon to a shopping mall and high street near you. Technology is often said to be neutral. How do you feel about this?

Melvin Kranzberg's first law of technology: Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral. Technology amplifies the ideology of those who fund/build it. Under surveillance capitalism, it's funded by VC and amplifies neoliberalism/libertarianism, inequality & colonialism.

That is nasty. The sooner the world starts adopting #vrm the better. In the meantime people in Calgary should boycott that shopping centre in protest.

If the software really just guesses age group and gender, there is no tracking of persons across the mall, and the pictures are not stored, is it really that bad? I mean, this is more or less the equivalent of hiring a bunch of students to do a manual count on paper, no?

Am I the only one who thinks the impact of regular people and not corporations having access to ubiquitous invisible cameras and tracking will end up having far more impact (both positive and negative)? Little brother can be as scary as big brother.
