Which organisations are you thinking of?

Ones that fit the criteria mentioned; including new ones that don’t exist yet but could be encouraged into existence.

Trouble is, those alternatives would then be funded by the powers-that-be, better maybe but not much.

They'd be funded by the commons and owned by the commons. Completely different set of incentives, success criteria, and power relationships. I'm talking about funding independent organisations that make decentralised, free and open, and interoperable alternatives.

Ah, having just come from
#opencoop2018 that's better, but I think you see my problem. Fines etc. go into the EU pot: https://www.quora.com/When-the-European-commission-levies-a-heavy-fine-for-price-fixing-where-does-the-money-go-Back-to-the-people-who-overpaid … from where they'd have to fund indepedent coops (for example), so there's still linkage.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these ‘fines’ are a façade for the commons while Google secretly is lobbying into European policy makers. It would be nice to see where exactly this money will be going to and for what purposes which we’ll probably never know exactly.
