The problem is criticism of Özil who is German not Turkish. And that is the problem: German Lothar Matthäus talking to Putin is no problem. German Özil talking to Erdogan is.

My understanding is that Özil‘s complaints were that he was criticized much more than other people from Germany meeting with Erdogan and other football players meeting with heads of state and that’s where the double-standard (and hence racism) is. Does that make sense?

For me it seems difficult to balance the different values at stake. So while I would criticize the meeting with Erdogan (because it validates Erdogan), I do think the criticism of Özil is out of proportion and making him leave the national team is definitely unwarranted.

Aral while agree with your statement regarding Erdogan and bad Ozil dealt with the issue I still think that racism still plays a very big role in why he quit the DFB. Media like BILD, Welt and co. were literally inciting racial hatred. It's just sad.
