Kind of surprised you haven't rolled your own AOSP + F-Droid and other goodies. Doesn't look that difficult.

“Doesn’t look that difficult.” Famous last words ;) (Anything done right is difficult. Feeling my way towards the difficult I want to live with for the next however many years) :)
-
Yeah I've never seen
@9600 just try to end a man like that. Ice cold. -
Haha :)

You may want to choose a model that has many users - they usually have fewer problems. https://stats.lineageos.org/

(And thanks again, will check it out) :)

#microG offers#LineageOS builds with F-Droid preinstalled. https://lineage.microg.org/ -
Thanks - saw that the other day but haven't had a chance to look into it. Sounds neat.

i run it. its ... not stable. and you might want to look up the aprils fools joke they played this year. i'd avoid it.

I concur. Walking away from my house reboots the phone. Opening images in twitter crashes OpenGL ES almost every time. Enabling HDR mode in the camera crashes the camera. Seriously, why can't we have a nice, simple, stable, open phone OS?
-
I have been running Lineage since Cyanogen was discontinued on a Samsung S4 mini and now a Samsung S5 and except for the GPS (which I don't like to use anyhow) it works fine. But I think that really is different for each individual phone.
-
Ah, interesting. I couldn't find specific notes/limitations on their installation pages. Will take a look at your model to see if the GPS issues are documented. Perhaps there is a place that lists model-related issues? (I am thinking of the Samsung S9+)

I was wondering, are you familiar with eelo? If so, what do you make of it?
-
Sounds like a great initiative.

What would be the best hardware for it?

I’m looking into that now :) Not sure about “best”; trying to find a modern, beefy device to test with :)
