Easy question: As head of @Wikimedia, do you endorse Google/Facebook’s business model? Are you happy to have surveillance capitalists as partners/sponsors?
Me: surveillance capitalists are not our allies and I would never legitimise them by being sponsored by them.

No response? Why is that not surprising in the least. Wouldn’t it be amazing for organisations like Mozilla/Wikimedia that purport to be champions of freedom and human rights to officially decry surveillance capitalists like Google/Facebook instead of getting in bed with them?https://twitter.com/aral/status/1008729892454838272 …

And by “amazing”, I mean “wholly expected and unremarkable” given their stated social missions. What’s remarkable is that they do not. That Mozilla takes billions from Google and is entirely funded by surveillance capitalism. That Wikimedia now wants a piece of the pie…

Put your faith in systems that give you agency without requiring that you put your faith in them. No centralised organisation or system can ever fulfill that criterion. Hence the need for systems that enable people to spontaneously/independently/non-hierarchically self-organise.
