At least Firefox is open source and Safari is not. Doesn't Safari get billions from Apple and isn't Apple also a surveillance capitalist?

Firefox is open source, yes. Safari is made by Apple. Apple makes proprietary products & does compromise people’s privacy in jurisdictions (like China) where it would otherwise adversely effect their bottom line but their core business model is different: https://ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/ …

My question is actually: How can one know how and if proprietarty products are or are not tracking you?
-
The standard method is to capture and observe its traffic. Even with open source products, unless you compile it yourself, it’s hard to prove the binary came from the source (there are ways). None of what I say should be construed as a defence of proprietary/closed products.

With respect, we have been working on improving our privacy protections this year, as our public roadmap shows: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Roadmap No need to assume malice. :)

I know you are not malicious
@ehsanakhgari but ask your leadership if you could enable tracking protection by default if there was no remaining technical issue or if Moz's hands are tied here by something else. -
Already did! Without going into the specifics of what option we are going to go forward with (since it's still being worked on by us including yours truly) I'll just say that if you are extrapolating based on the past, you're hopefully up for a happy surprise.

Apple also gets billions from Google for selling out users and making Google the default search on iOS

What is the difference between tracking protection turned on in Firefox and Safari’s new protection? 24 hour cookies?
